Cloud Computing Is Real; “THE Cloud?” - Not So Much

This love affair with abusing the amorphous thing called “THE Cloud” is rapidly approaching meteoric levels of asininity. There is no singularity that can be described as “THE Cloud.” There are many clouds, they’re not federated, they don’t natively interoperate at the application layer and they’re all mostly proprietary in their platform and operation. They’re also not all “public” and most don’t exchange data in any form.

Tag clouds and cloud applications are very appealing to me, yet I agree with the author that there is no THE CLOUD.

I would suggest that tag clouds are just one more way to share data. I think it is an excellent nexus between the visual(data cloud) and the interpreted(words). One could relate it to the Venn Diagram, a Word document, etc. They are all helpful, but they are applications and you have to APPLY them to make them work together.

In the future, someone will introduce a small widget that you can use to make, save and integrate your own (or others) clouds, in the meantime I will enjoy what we have now.
